Dependent Personality Disorder

Dependent Personality Disorder is like codependency.

The overlap between codependent neediness and Dependent Personality Disorder are all varying manifestations of “clinginess.” There isn’t much else to say because there is so little research investigating it.

You will recognize it in a person who literally cannot do anything or go anywhere by themselves. They are submissive and clingy with a developmentally immature need for help with fundamental life tasks.

Relationships with this type mimic that of raising a child. Because childishness is what “stabilizes” their personality, growing up would provoke an experience of annihilation.

A supportive partner can establish small responsibilities for them framed as bonding exercises. Nothing calms an attachment-anxious child faster than a responsibility they feel is important. It is a normal part of development that Dependent Personality Disorders missed out on.

Providing the experience in a firm, loving manner may help them a lot, but do you really want to be romantic with someone you are raising like a child? After they are done growing up, they will leave.
